Bandits record first victory of season
BERWICK BANDITS 54SCUNTHORPE SCORPIONS 36Berwick Bandits recorded their first victory of the season in the Championship when they beat Scunthorpe by 18 points at Shielfield on Saturday.
The Scorpions arrived with three former Bandits - Theo Pijper, Tero Aarnio and Thomas Jorgensen - in their line-up, but it was only Jorgensen who posed a major threat to the home side, winning his first four races.
Pijper, reserve Josh MacDonald and guest Jake Allen also took the chequered flag for the visitors, but with the Bandits more solid throughout they coasted to a comfortable victory.
Danny Gappmaier was the man of the moment, winning his first three rides, and paid for four wins in total, top scoring with paid 16.
But there were also valuable contributions from Nikolaj Busk Jakobsen and Leon Flint in particular.
Berwick opened up an eight point lead at 13-5 with 5-1’s in heats two and three, and from that moment on they never looked to be in any danger, although Scunthorpe saw their scoring potential restricted when MacDonald fell leading heat four, a 1-5 turning into a. 3-3, whilst MacDonald and Aarnio both failed to leave the start line due to mechanical problems in heats six and seven.
A 5-1 from Gappmaier and Flint in eight saw Bandits extend their lead to 12 at 30-18 and after that it was just a case of what the final score would be.
Berwick - Gappmaier 15+1, Jakobsen 12, Flint 11+4, Summers 8, Bickley 4+3, Etheridge 4+2, Garcia rider/rep.
Scunthorpe - Jorgensen 14, Pijper 9, Allen 6, MacDonald 4, Lambert 2+1, Palin 1, Aarnio 0.
On Friday, the Berwick Bullets lost 51-38 away to a Belle Vue Colts in the National League. Ex-Colt Leon Flint scored a 15-point full maximum, his second in successive weeks against his former club, whilst another Manchester old boy, Kyle Bickley, scored 9+2.
This weekend Berwick face a real test of character when they take on the highly fancied Leicester Lions home and away on Saturday and Sunday.
The Bullets will also take on the Lion Cubs in the National League following the Championship fixtures.
The Bandits are also at Plymouth on Tuesday and Poole on Wednesday.
