Frustration as Bandits beaten at home by Bears
BERWICK BANDITS 43REDCAR BEARS 47Berwick’s hopes of climbing the Championship league table suffered a setback on Saturday when they went down to a 43-47 home defeat at the hands of Redcar Bears.
But the Bandits, who suffered their fair share of misfortune, were upbeat afterwards with manager Gary Flint claiming they just didn’t get the breaks when they needed them.
Two incidents cost the home side dearly - Coty Garcia suffered an engine failure on the start line in heat eight, and then, perhaps more telling, fellow reserve Leon Flint suffered the misfortune of a shed chain when on a 5-1 with Kevin Doolan in heat 12, which sent him cartwheeling down the track, the race being awarded as a 3-3.
After the meeting Flint was hard on himself when he posted on social media that had it not been for the accident Berwick might not have lost the meeting, but the reaction from fans was that it was a racing incident and they were just happy he was able to walk away unscathed, even if his bike took most of the impact.
Redcar arrived at Shielfield with new British Champion Charles Wright spearheading their attack, and he led the Bandits home on four occasions, top scoring with 12 paid 13, which included vital points in heats 13 and 15.
After Flint’s fall in heat 12, Berwick still led 38-34, but a 1-5 from Erik Riss and Wright in heat 13 levelled it up at 39-all with two races remaining.

The Bears then inflicted a hammer blow in heat 14 when Jordan Stewart, who had failed to score in his first two outings, popped out the gate for another 1-5 with Nathan Greaves over Dany Gappmaier and Garcia, putting them 40-44 in front.
Berwick needed a 5-1 from the last race just to draw, but Wright took the win ahead of Doolan and Aaron Summers and the Bears left with the match points, which took them to fourth place in the table.
Berwick: Doolan 11, Summers 8+2, Etheridge 8+1, Jakobsen 7, Gappmaier 4+2, Garcia 3+1, Flint 2+1.
Redcar: Wright 12+1, Riss 11+1, Greaves 9+4, Palm Toft 7, Andersen 5, Stewart 3, Woolley 0.
This weekend, Berwick are back in league action when they face top of the table Glasgow (away on Friday and home on Saturday).
