Wooler hit back for a draw in Alliance derby
Saturday proved to be another difficult day for teams in the Northern Alliance with a large number of games postponed because of waterlogged pitches.
One game that did go ahead was the local derby between Wooler and North Sunderland in the Development Division and this saw the teams take a point apiece from a 2-2 draw.
Wooler will probably feel the happier of the two sides at the final whistle as at half-time they were on the back foot, trailing 0-2.
The Seahouses side had made the brighter start, and in a strong wind they had the ball in the net after quarter of an hour but the effort was ruled out for offside.
The breakthrough came after 25 minutes when Tom Vickers cut in on the right and fired in a low shot which found the bottom corner.
It looked like this might be the only goal of the half, but just a minute before half-time Kevin Elliott added a second. His initial shot from a central position was blocked, but the rebound fell onto his left foot and he fired his second effort into the roof of the net from 20 yards out.
Wooler improved in the second half Abut they found it difficult to break down the Seahouses defence in open play and it took two free kicks to get them back into the match. First of all Jack Strangeways found a way around the wall and into the net from the set piece. Then Tristan Jeffrey played in a low ball to Tom Allan who fired a low shot on the turn from inside the box.
His shirtless celebrations were maybe a little over the top in the conditions, but the point earned helped consolidate their 11th place in the table, whilst North Sunderland remain fourth.
On Saturday (February 29), Wooler are home to Red House Farm whilst North Sunderland are home to second from top West Jesmond.
Another game to beat the weather was the match between Newcastle East End Reserves and Lowick. Unfortunately for Lowick, they saw no change in their luck as they went down to a 6-1 away defeat, This week they are back in ‘Town’ when they travel to take on Newcastle Chemfica Amateurs.
Spittal a Rovers saw their Division 2 home fixture against Newcasltle Blue Star Reserves postponed because of a waterlogged pitch. On Saturday they travel to take on Gateshead Redheugh
