Smith nets late leveller for Rangers
BERWICK RANGERS 2GALA FR 2A late injury time time equaliser from substitute Euan Smith earned Berwick a point with a 2-2 home draw against Gala in the Border Lowland League derby at Shielfield on Saturday.
Two goals from Galbraith, one in each half, had put the visitors 0-1 and 1-2 up, Rangers equalising through Yaw Osei, but it was Smith who salvaged a point for the home side with a second leveller in time added on.
Early in the game Rangers’ keeper Sean Brennan made a good save from a free kick, but Galbraith gave Gala the lead after 29 minutes when he netted following a corner.
Darren Smith was then substituted by Euan Smith after sustaining a head injury. Osei head over and Brennan made another save before half-time, but at the break Rovers led 0-1.
There wasn’t a lot between the sides at the start of the second half and it took until the 79th minute before Berwick got back on level terms with Osei equalising with a good finish after another attacking run.
Gala responded with a header and shot over the bar in quick succession, whilst Brennan made another good save.
But on 85 minutes they took the lead for a second time, Galbraith firing home after a corner was cleared into his path.
The visitors were then reduced to ten men when Scott Yaylor-McKenzie was red carded after receiving two yellows.
Berwick had a couple of half chances, but it looked as if the visitors were going to hang on for victory until Smith struck almost at the death, firing in a shot from distance.
Afterwards, Berwick manager Ian Little said: “It was a great strike for the equaliser, but we left it late.
“We weren’t at our best and Gala pushed us all the way and it looked like they were going to win, but the players showed character once again and that is what we need from them for the rest of the season.”
Rangers are now 11th in the table on 19 points.
Berwick’s next Lowland League game is on Saturday (January 11) away to Vale of Leithenwith a 2pm kick-off.
