Rangers to kick off with three pre-season friendlies
Berwick Rangers have confirmed three pre-season friendlies at Shielfield in preparation for the 2021-22 campaign.
Provided government roadmap targets are met and restrictions are lifted, the club is hopeful fans will be admitted to the stadium for the games.
Planned fixtures will kick-off against Heart of Midlothian on Friday, June 25 (7pm), with Jambos gaffer Robbie Neilson set to bring a strong outfit to Northumberland as he prepares for life back in the Scottish Premiership.
The following Saturday (July 3 at 2pm) Ian Little’s side will play host to Northern League Division 1 side North Shields, who brought a vociferous following to Shielfield on their last visit in the summer of 2015, when the two sides played out a 1-1 draw.
Finally, Berwick will play host to Cumbrian outfit Workington AFC on Saturday July 10 (3pm KO). A Northern Premier League West Division side, Workington are currently managed by former Dundee United, St Johnstone, Hearts, St Mirren and Carlisle United man Danny Grainger.
Between these dates, the club are also set to arrange and play a couple of midweek behind-closed-doors bounce matches as the coaching team look to bolster match fitness amongst the squad ahead of the new season.
The club will confirm ticketing arrangements for matches closer to the pre-season start date and when more clarity is available, with a digital ticketing system ready to go if required.
Meanwhile, the Scottish Lowland Football League (SLFL) - of which Berwick are members - have confirmed that they have entered into discussions to invite Rangers and Celtic ‘B’ teams to join the league for next season (2021/22) on a one-season basis.
The discussions, which are at an early stage, have come following an invite to open talks from the Lowland League to both clubs to help solve the gap which exists in the player development pathway in Scotland
Organisers of the Berwick Charities Cup football competition have confirmed their intention to run the event in 2021. They are now looking for teams interested in playing and are hopeful that games can kick off by the end of May. Teams keen to enter are asked to contact the organisers through their Facebook page.
