Rangers end year on winning note
Berwick Rangers 1Caledonia Braves 0Berwick picked up three welcome points with a 1-0 home Lowland League win over Caledonia Braves at Shielfield on Saturday.
The only goal of the game was scored by Yaw Osei who netted midway through the first half.
The win, their fifth of the season, lifted Rangers up to 11th in the table with 18 points from 17 games played.
There wasn’t a lot between the sides in the early exchanges, Osei shooting over the bar for Berwick.
Sean Brennan made a good save from a Raffi Krissian volley, whilst at the other end John Balde dragged a shot wide.
The breakthrough came when Osei ran onto a flick-on and his shot was parrfied into the net by the keeper.
The Braves responded and almost drew level when they struck a post, but Berwick held out to lead 1-0 at the break.
The second half resulted in few chances for either side, but the visitors made a late push and Craig Quinn headed over before Brennan made a good save late in the game to keep Rangers in front.
After the game, Berwick manager Ian Little said: “That was a nice way to round of the year ... with a win.
“This week we have lost two of our first team regulars - striker Daryl Healy and Ricky Miller - who have both joined our Lowland League rivals East Kilbride, and we wish them well for the future.
“We only have a small squad here and their departure has put us under a bit of pressure, so the win is all the more pleasing in that respect.
“Hopefully we can keep it going and kick off 2020 in the right manner when we take on Gala at home next Saturday (January 4).”
