It was a scrappy game, and the visitors ended the match with only ten men after Dean Hoskins, a former Berwick player, was sent off with 15 minutes remaining.

Manager Ian Little was naturally delighted at the result and says he hopes the team can use the victory as a springboard for the rest of the season.

“We needed to get that monkey off our back,” said Little, “and hopefully we can use it as a springboard for the rest of the season and go on and achieve bigger and better things.

“It wasn’t the prettiest of games as the wind was a spoiler throughout, but a win is a win and hopefully the lads will take a lot of confidence from the result.”

Berwick made a bright start and after early chances for Waugh and Healy, Lewis Barr slotted them 1-0 in front after 24 minutes when he tapped into the net following a good passage of play when the ball was headed down to him in the box.

Play was scrappy and at half-time Rangers held a slender advantage. Spartans saw more of the ball in the second half without ever being threatening and on 64 minutes the hosts doubled their lead when Daryl Healy took advantage of miscommunication in the visitors’ defence and ran through to head the ball past the keeper following a long ball from the half-way line.

Blair Atkinson headed narrowly wide for Spartans, but after 75 minutes they gave themselves a mountain to climb when Hoskins was red carded following a second bookable offence.

Late in the game Barr went close to adding a third for Berwick but his shot from outside the box bounced back off the crossbar.

“It’s another cup match against Newtongrange Star next week (in the South Challenge Cup),” said Little, “hopefully we can show the same passion and desire to help us get another win.

“After that, the next goal is our first league win of the season.”
