Berwick Town to join North Northumberland League
Berwick will have another competitive football team in action next season following the formation of Berwick Town FC.
They will now become the seventh amateur side to represent the town alongside Tweedmouth Rangers, who play in the East of Scotland League, Tweedmouth Amateurs, Tweedmouth Harrow, Berwick Colts and Highfields United, who all ply their trade in the Border Amateur League, and Spittal Rovers in the Northern Alliance.Berwick Town are affiliated to the Northumberland FA and will play in the North Northumberland League, with home games being scheduled for Barber Park at Lowick.Chairman and manager is Jordan Lees who said: “We have been overwhelmed with the response from players wanting to join us.“There is a good mix of experience and age and I can’t wait to get started working with them in training. There is a good balance and we are looking forward to the journey ahead as a new club.”Berwick Town started training last week following the relaxation of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions and they will play their first pre-season friendly away against Heddon United on July 31.Meanwhile, in the Northern Alliance at the weekend, Spittal Rovers lost 1-0 away to Newcastle University A in the Amateur Cup, their fourth successive defeat in the competition.
The defeat leaves the Berwick side bottom of their group, with two games remaining, but with no chance of progressing to the latter stages.North Sunderland went down 2-0 away to Heaton Stannington in the Cowey Cup, making it three defeats and two victories from their five matches to date.
The Seahouses side are currently fifth in their seven team group, and are also unlikely to progress to the latter stages of the competition.In the North Northumberland League, Belford had a 1-0 home win over Cramlington U23s. It was 0-0 at half-time and the only goal of the game was scored by Adam Deans with a wonder strike from more than 30 yards out.This Saturday (April 24), Spittal are away to Haltwhistle Jubilee in the NFA Minor Cup.North Sunderland have a free weekend, but conclude their Cowey Cup group programme home to Cullercoats Reserves next Wednesday (April 28).
