No joy for local sides in top of table clashes
It wasn’t the best of days for the local sides at the top of the Northumberland & Tyneside Cricket League at the weekend with Tillside 1sts, Berwick 1sts and Warenford all losing their matches on Saturday.
In Division 2, Tillside 1sts suffered a narrow four run defeat in their top of the table clash away to Ponteland 1sts. The home side put on 124 all out with Jonathan Appleby on 53, but in reply, Tillside came up just short at 120 all out, Ross Hindmarsh top scoring on 32, with just four balls of the game remaining.
The defeat means Ponteland now hold a 23 point lead at the top. They have 158 points whilst Tillside are second on 135.
In Division 3, Berwick 1sts went down to a convincing nine wicket defeat away to Ashington Rugby 1sts. Berwick were 162 all out in their 45 overs with Elliott Keenan on 55, but Ashington put on 163-1 in reply with Adam Peacock leading their charge with an unbeaten century on 102 not out.
Ashington now top the table with 183 points from seven games with Berwick in second on 153.
And in Division 5 North, Warenford lost by six wickets away to Bedlington 2nds. Michael Thompson was 96 not out as Waren made 151-6, but Bedlington were 152-4 in reply with Derek Shepherd on 60.
Warenford now sit second in the table on 134 points from seven games with Ashington Rugby 1sts leading the way on 156.
Tillside 2nds won by 34 runs at home to Rock. Tillside were 152 all out with Roman Atkinson their leading bat on 42, Harry Parkinson taking four wickets for the visitors. Rock were all out for 118 in reply, elder statesman Alan Hindmarsh taking four wickets.
In Division 6, leaders Berwick 2nds were awarded maximum points after Embleton conceded earlier in the week and the Pier Field side remain in prime position. They have 158 points from seven games with Stobswood 2nds in second on 125 with Wooler third on 123.
Wooler had a nine wicket home win over Ulgham 2nds. In a low scoring game, Ulgham were 61 all out with Andrew Aitchison and Angus Todd taking four wickets apiece. Wooler (64-1) chased it down in 25 overs.
In midweek, Berwick 2nds had an eight wicket home win over Wooler in the Enid Farmer Cup.
The previous evening, Berwick 1sts had been due to travel to take on Warkworth 1sts in the Tyneside Charity Bowl, but the fixture was postponed due to a wet pitch.
In the William Birkett Cup, Berwick 1sts were due to take on Stobswood 1sts at home on Wednesday (June 2).
And tonight (Thursday, June 3) Warenford will face Alnwick 2nds in the Dr Tom Barlow Memorial Cup at home.
In the Thomas Wilson League Cup, Alnmouth & Lesbury 1sts are due to take on Tillside 1sts in a second round game on Wednesday, June 9.
