Hindmarsh century as local sides make winning start

The cricket season started on Saturday following the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions and for many players it was their first competitive action in almost a year and a half.

For the majority of the local sides it was a winning start.

In the Northumberland & Tyneside League Division 2, skipper Liam Hindmarsh hit a century as Tillside recorded a six wicket victory over Blagdon Park 1sts.

Blagdon batted first and they put on a respectable 184-9 in their innings, with Calum Bickerton and new bowler Greg Davidson claiming three wickets apiece. But Hindmarsh led by example with the bat and his unbeaten 111 was the mainstay of the Tillside tally, which topped 188-4.

In Division 3, Berwick 1sts had a big 177 run victory over Alnmouth & Lesbury 2nds at the Pier Field. James Patterson hit 91 not out (retired hurt) as Berwick put on a big score of 239-6. Alnmouth & Lesburywere always fighting a losing battle and were all out for only 64 in reply.

In Division 5 North, Tillside 2nds had a much closer 13 run victory away to Blagdon Park 2nds.

Tillside batted first and made 203-6 with Blagdon coming up short at 190-6 in reply.

Warenford opened their campaign with a comfortable eight wicket home win over Cramlington 2nds.

The visitors batted first and were all out for 109. It was an easy target for Warenford who saw Brian Thompson top score with 41 as they reached 111 in reply.

Meanwhile, Rock suffered a heavy ten wicket home defeat at the hands of Ashington Rugby 2nds.

In Division 6 North, Berwick 2nds lost by two wickets on their trip to Bomarsund. Berwick batted first and were all out for 128, a target reached by the home side who chased it down with two overs to spare.

Embleton (41) beat Warkworth 2nds (38 all out) in a low scoring game, whilst Wooler were unable to raise a team for their first game away to Blyth 2nds and so conceded the fixture.


This Saturday (April 24), Tillside 1sts are home to Cowgate; Tillside 2nds are away to Morpeth 2nds; Berwick 1sts are away to Whitley Bay1sts; Berwick 2nds are home to Embleton; Wooler are home to Bomarsund 2nds; Warenford are away to Howick.
