Berwick 1sts through to semi-finals of Birkett Cup
Berwick 1sts are through to the semi-finals of the William Birkett Cup in the Northumberland & Tyneside Cricket League.
They qualified for the last four of the competition with a nail-biting three run victory over Ashington Rugby 1sts at the Pier Field.
Manu Shukla top scored with 40 as Berwick posted 126-7 in their 18 overs. David Dent hit 60 for the visitors in reply, but they came up just short in the final over at 123-7 with James Thompson taking four wickets.
The following evening, Berwick 2nds were due to face Bates Cottages at home in the semi-finals of the Enid Farmer Cup but the game was postponed because of the weather.
Saturday’s league programme was also badly hit by the weather with the majority of local games cancelled due to rain.
However, Berwick 1sts did manage to play in Division 3 and they maintained the pressure on league leaders Ashington Rugby 1sts by achieving a seven wicket home win over GEM’s 1sts.
Berwick won the toss and elected to field. The visitors put on 123-5 with Zohaib Shahid their top scorer on 52.
Berwick, in reply, needed only 16 overs to chase it down at 124-3 with Jordan Woodcock on 55 and Elliott Keenan on 44 not out.
The victory leaves Berwick in second place in the table, 33 points behind Ashington.
Berwick Rangers were forced to cancel their home friendly against Hearts on Friday after the Premier League club reported they had five cases of coronavirus within their camp.
A club spokesman said that whilst they were extremely disappointed at having to cancel the game, players’ and supporters’ safety was paramount.
Berwick stood to lose a substantial amount of revenue as all on-line tickets had to be refunded, but anyone wanting to donate their ticket money was asked to buy 50-50 draw tickets online instead.
Rangers were last night (Wednesday) due to take on Dundee United in another friendly at Shielfield and on Saturday (July 3) they are at home against against North Shields (kick-off 2pm).
Rangers will kick off their Lowland League campaign with a home game against Caledonian Braves on Saturday, July 17, followed by an away fixture against Celtic B on Wednesday 21.
