X marks the spot for Lucy
A new artist-in-residence taking up a six-month post in Berwick is hoping to prove she's got the X-factor.
Londoner Lucy Parker has been chosen by Berwick Film and Media Art Festival and Berwick Visual Arts to work with moving images to produce work that ties in with this year’s festival theme of X.
She said: “I’m approaching the theme of X in two ways – as the axis on the graph that measures change and as in the X-file, a file given minimal-priority status and concerned with unexplained phenomena.
“I’m very much looking forward to spend time in Berwick to develop this film with people in the town.”
Lucy was selected from more than 70 applicants for the residency opportunity by a panel representing the Arts Council and the two Berwick organisations involved.
James Lowther, head of visual art for Berwick Visual Arts, said: “We are delighted to announce Lucy as our new artist-in-residence.
“We were impressed by her response to the theme of the residency and her intentions to explore this within the context of Berwick, and we look forward to welcoming her to Berwick.”
Peter Taylor, director of the festival, said: “X, the festival theme this year, is about getting involved, and selected from a diverse and brilliant range of artists and applications, we felt that Lucy Parker’s proposal was the one that would best fulfil this potential.
Lucy will take up residency in the town from May until September, and her research-led approach adopts collaborative filmmaking methods when working with a community, she says.
She is interested in ways that social networks give agency to individuals and how film can have a social impact in its production and screening.
