Woffinden told the audience his aim was to try and win back to back titles for the first time in 2019, and he is leaving nothing to chance.

He is on a strict diet and has employed David Beckham’s former fitness coach in preparation for his assault on the Championship.

Woffinden, whose father Rob rode for Berwick in the early 90’s, is the only British rider to win the world title three times.

The evening, organised by the Berwick Bandits’ Supporters’ Club, attracted a bumper audience and was hosted by Nigel Pearson of Sky Sport and BT Sport.

Woffinden also met up with local teenager Leon Flint (16), who is one of the brightest prospects in British speedway.

Flint has signed for his home town club, Berwick Bandits, and will make his debut in the Premiership this year.
