Wooler win memorial trophy
The Annual Sean Simpson Memorial Trophy was last week contested between teams of boys and girls from hosts Belford First School and Wooler First School, resulting in an away win for the visitors.
The 2018 event consisted of a Champions League format for boy’s and girl’s teams in Year 3 and Year 4 and also included a whole host of football activities including dribbling modules; penalty shoot-outs and the ever popular speed radar challenge.
The tournament rotates on an annual-basis between the respective school venues in memory of local football coach Sean Simpson, who died unexpectedly 13 years ago. The event is organised by Trident Soccer and this year’s tournament was another resounding success according to FA coach Ryan Jobson .
He said: “I’d like to congratulate everyone who participated in this year’s Sean Simpson Memorial Tournament including all the boys and girls, parents, supporters and school staff. I would also like to thank FA referee Richard Kelley, who help provide a professional atmosphere to the proceedings.
“The annual event helps bring local children and schools together and the tournament is a fitting way to remember Sean, a local football coach from Berwick, and commemorates his work with boys and girls at both Belford and Wooler schools.
“The event is a fun packed day for everyone involved and helps foster positive relationships between youngsters, schools and local communities within north Northumberland.
“The Tournament also provides young players with an early opportunity to exhibit their football skills in a positive and friendly environment.”
