WI's centenary celebration at Bamburgh Castle
Members of Bamburgh WI enjoyed a birthday celebration back in the place where it all started 100 years ago to the day.
On October 5, 1918, after hearing about the Women’s Institute, the then Lord Armstrong asked a group of women from the village to come to Bamburgh Castle to talk about forming their own institute.
The following week, they met in the Victoria Hotel and elected officers and planned a programme, after which 33 members enrolled.
A century later, current castle owner Francis Armstrong invited Bamburgh WI and neighbouring groups back to the castle for a party, where they were entertained by BBC Radio Newcastle’s Sue Sweeney.
Bamburgh WI chairman Christine Hutchinson and Hilary Robson, chairman of the Northumberland Federation of the WI, are pictured cutting a birthday cake.
