Water-way for Diane to tackle Dry January

A north Northumberland woman has more reasons than most to be looking forward to a cup of tea tomorrow morning.

Diane Wright took her Dry January pledge to the extreme by cutting out all drinks except water.

“Apart from a muggy head for a couple of days, I haven’t had any side effects,” she revealed. “However, I will be looking forward to a cup of tea of Friday morning!”

As well as the health benefits of cutting out alcohol, caffeine and sugary drinks, it’s all been for a good cause.

“I signed up to support the work of Water Aid who aim to provide clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene for communities around the world where this human right isn’t available. Back in the 1990s, our house had an unreliable water supply so I’ve never taken for granted turning on the tap.”

“I took part for the first time last year and managed to complete a fortnight drinking only water. I gave a donation to reflect what I would have spent on drinks.

“This year I decided I should give myself a proper challenge and complete the full month.

“From January 1, I have drunk only water, hot or cold. My only slip was accidentally taking a sip of my husband’s coffee, which was a bit of a shock.

“I have so far avoided temptations at my friend’s birthday party and a weekend in Malvern.”

Diane, a Guides leader, also enlisted the support of 4th Berwick Guides with Water Aid activities including a quiz, designing water bottle wrappers, and using a water filter – turning muddy water into clean drinking water. They also learnt what can or can’t be flushed down the loo.

Each Guide supported her challenge with a £1 donation.

Diane works as a senior librarian with the Northumberland Libraries Service. She also enjoys yoga and cycling.

She has raised nearly £100 so far. If you would like to sponsor Diane visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/wateraiddianewright
