Visitor centre plan mooted for former Methodist Church
Plans are being prepared for a visitor centre and café in the former Berwick Methodist Church on Walkergate.
There have been calls for a dedicated visitor centre in the town for many years.
Details of what is understood to be a private venture were revealed in a post on Berwick Deserves Better Facebook page.
It says: ‘Would you like to run your own café in Berwick’s soon-to-be-opened visitor centre?
‘In 2019, a major new tourist attraction will open in the town – The Berwick Visitor Centre.
‘Its aim is to be the ‘go-to place’ for all visitors to the town. It will feature entertaining audio-visual material, as well as information boards describing the history and importance of Berwick over the last 1,000 years.
‘Importantly, it will also direct visitors where to go to see the many key visitor attractions in and around the town, thereby encouraging them to stay longer in the town and spend more money here in shops, cafés and restaurants.
‘The centre, which will be run as a not-for-profit venture, will feature a café area as an integral part of the ‘welcoming and informing visitors’ objective.
‘It is our preference to have a suitably qualified individual or existing café run the visitor centre café on a fully independent basis.’
