It’s good news that it will be upgraded South of the border. Regrettably for Advertiser readers North of the border, there will be no such improvements to their stretch of single carriageway between the border crossing North of Berwick and Torness, near Dunbar, until after 2020.

I have been in correspondence with John Lamont MSP and he asked the Scottish Transport Minister about this matter on my behalf in 2016.

The Government response was that no upgrade is planned until ‘various reviews of reviews’ have been made. This process will apparently take years.

I fear the A1 road North of the English border is unable to cope with the current volume of traffic and is a potential death and injury trap for users.

I urge all motorists who use the A1 road to contact their MP and MSP to demand that there is some meaningful work done on it to make it fit for its purpose as the major trunk road North/South.

A decent road and better infrastructure will be of benefit to all of us, North and South of the border.
