Unlocking the potential of Berwick quayside
Consultants who will carry out an options appraisal on Berwick quayside are expected to be appointed next month.
The town’s Coastal Communities Team has received a grant of £30,000 for the work towards its Unlocking Berwick Quayside project from the Government’s Coastal Revival Fund.
Through consultancy support, the project aims to identify development options, through local consultation, and constraints, clarifying limitations relating to infrastructure, services, covenants and licences.
Julie Kennedy, of Berwick Community Trust, said: “The regeneration of the quayside is cited as a priority of the town’s 2017 economic plan and its regeneration is identified as key to sustaining the town’s economic growth and strengthening the links between the quayside and the town.
“By re-imagining the use of this space, it is expected that it will complement the recent resurgence of the developing retail hotspots in the Bridge Street/Hide Hill area of town.
“It will also enhance the portfolio of projects Berwick has already established, such as the regeneration of The Maltings Theatre, the development of the Port of Berwick and the refurbishment of Berwick Barracks.
“The development of the quayside alongside all of these exciting projects would increase the town’s economy as well as provide a more cohesive connection between the town, its attractions and the river.”
Applications are now open for consultants to apply for the post.
They are expected to deliver a report this autumn which will build on the recent works to understand the heritage and conservation issues of the quayside and explore what might be appropriate in terms of the local economy and tourism.
