The awards celebrate the delivery of outstanding patient experience by health and social care organisations.

This is the third time the trust has been named trust of the year by PEN and recognises the high number of awards and runner up accolades won from diverse areas.

It also celebrates work by the trust supporting and sharing expertise with other organisations to set up patient experience programmes, as part of the Patient Experience Collaboration.

Its Palliative Care Northumbria project won the partnership working to improve the experience category, while a project using an assistive hearing device with patients who have a hearing impairment, on an elderly care ward at The Northumbria hospital, won the patient insight for improvement category.

Annie Laverty, director of patient experience at Northumbria Healthcare, said: “We are passionate about making sure all patients here at Northumbria have the very best experience possible and are delighted to have been named trust of the year for the third time.”

She added: “Winning three awards and being runner up in so many different areas highlights the breadth and variety of work we support across Northumberland and North Tyneside and I’m really pleased this has been recognised on a national stage.

“Winning these awards would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our staff working in hospitals and the community and I’d like to thank them all for their continued efforts.

“We look forward to building on this success and implementing more initiatives to benefit our patients.”

The trust also received five runner-up accolades for improving the well-being and experience of patients on an elderly care ward at North Tyneside hospital, giving women the chance to share their feedback in ‘real-time’ whilst they are still in hospital, improving palliative care in hospital and in the community, and patient experience team of the year.

In addition, the trust has also been shortlisted for the CHKS Top Hospitals Patient Experience Award.
