Entertainment on the field on Saturday was provided by Uncle Brian’s Punch and Judy show, back by special request, and an end-of-season visit by the Rag Bag Morris team, which provided music, dancing and colour on a day that was often interrupted by rain.

The dog show was very well supported with plenty of entries in all classes and inside the marquee, the story was the same. Extra space had to be provided for the high number of entries. The tables were full of seasonal fruit and vegetables of very high standard as well as the customary baking, jams and handicrafts.

A record number of sticks were dressed and entered into the stick-dressing competition. Children’s imaginations were well and truly fired up by the wooden spoon decorating competition.

The sheep section was well supported with a very high number of entries and it was good to see some new names on the prize tickets. The sheepdog trials are firmly established as part of the show and upwards of 30 dogs were run.

Only the adults and children’s sports were seriously affected by the weather; it wasn’t possible to run all of those events. However, the show is always rounded off by the hill race, an exciting scramble up the scree followed by a run along and back down the hill, and no rain was going to disrupt that.
