Traders express dismay at approval of retail park plan
Berwick Chamber of Trade has revealed its disappointment at the recent approval of planning permission for a new retail park.
Plans by TCD Estates and Berwick Corporation (Freemen) Trustees for five retail units and two food and drink units at Loaning Meadows on the northern outskirts of the town, were approved by Northumberland County Council’s strategic planning committee earlier this month.
John Haswell, writing in the Chamber’s newsletter, said: ‘The Chamber has opposed this development from the start based upon our belief that it will have a detrimental impact on the town centre.
‘Our position was supported by a large majority of our members and we feel strongly that the retail assessment produced for the developers was fundamentally flawed.
‘The developers have offered to work with the Chamber and others to develop a town centre improvement programme to help mitigate the impact of the development.
‘However their client, the Freemen of Berwick, have only offered £40,000 to help with this programme. In our opinion this is a derisory amount compared with the scale of their investment. We were very disappointed with the outcome.
‘Our focus will now switch to driving through improvements to the town centre working with any party that is able to help.’
