Berwick Town Council project officer Julian Smith said: “Space for Christmas trees on the town hall steps is limited. It’s also a problem that the tree needs to be sited in the main entrance making access to the Guildhall difficult. By taking the lights off the steps and onto the pillars we tackle all of of the problems at once.

“Marygate always has a beautiful large tree thanks to the efforts of the Rotary Club so this year, instead of having its little brother tree on the steps, we have something new and unique to the town hall.”

The official switch-on is on Saturday at 4pm, with a craft fair from 10am and carols and music all day.

There is also a children’s competition to win a Samsung Galaxy tablet and the chance to switch on the lights with the mayor. The competition is a Carol Hunt whereby 12 shops will have special posters with the name of a Christmas carol. Children will need to write down all 12 shops on the entry form and they will be entered into the prize draw. Entry forms and details will be at the Guildhall on Saturday.
