Town council agrees to make office move
Berwick Town Council has reaffirmed its commitment to finding new offices.
It plans to vacate its premises at The Chandlery and move to Berwick Workspace.
The decision was originally made last August but there has been little progress on its implementation due to the resignation of the previous clerk.
Interim clerk Gareth Davies has now recalculated the total additional cost of the new office, over the first two years, to be £7,360.
In addition, the council has agreed to set aside £2,500 for removal costs which were not included in the original report.
However, councillors still want to go ahead and steps will now be taken to negotiate the surrender of the existing lease, if possible.
It is understood the council will avoid incurring costs for the remainder of its lease if a new tenant can be found.
Cllr Hazel Bettison felt it was important for the council to have a more centrally located office.
The office at The Chandlery has no panic alarm and staff are often working on their own. Cllr Bettison said staff would benefit from a more secure base and the general public wouldfind it easier to access.
The council would also be able to have an effective meeting space if it takes up a place at Berwick Workspace.
