Team calls for project proposals
Berwick's recently-formed coastal community team has issued a call for potential projects it could help develop.
The team is currently putting together an economic plan for the town, to be submitted by the end of this month.
Julien Lake, of Berwick Community Trust, one of the project partners, said: “Members of the local community, be they individuals, businesses or community organisations, who have a project proposal are invited to get in touch with the community trust and let us know.
“The projects need to have an economic benefit but if they have merit could be incorporated into the economic plan and might have a better chance of winning grant funding support.”
The economic plan is being developed by the community trust, county and town councils with input from the Chamber of Trade and a wide range of local businesses.
A large number of interviews with individuals and businesses north and south of the border have been conducted to build on the work that was initiated by the county council last year.
Mr Lake said: “Key issues at this stage have been identified as the skills base within the town, the quality of life offer and the need to better coordinate tourism and marketing activities. Key projects are likely to include the barracks, the delivery of new learning and skills infrastructure and public realm improvements.”
The work is being funded by a £10,000 grant from the Department of Communities and Local Government but it is hoped larger sums could be levered in if the partnership is judged to be a success.
