Berwick were only denied what would have been their second win of the season at Balmoor when Peterhead scored a second half penalty on Saturday.

Rangers, who won 2-0 away to the championship-chasing contenders earlier in the season, had taken a first half lead when Steven Thomson netted from the rebound after a Paul Willis penalty had been saved.

But in the second half, Peterhead, who won 3-2 at Shielfield at the end of January, salvaged a point when Rory McAllister equalised from the spot.

The result meant no change for either side with Peterhead remaining in second in Scottish League 2 with Berwick still in eighth.

After a slow start the game burst into life when Robbie McCrorie saved from Allan Smith on nine minutes, and just a minute later, at the other end, Jamie Todd had a header saved by Fleming.

Ousman See shot over for Rangers before Rory McAllister was also denied by McCrorie and Jordon Brown fired wide just seconds later.

As play continued to swing from end to end, Chris Johnston had a shot blocked for the home side, whilst Paul Wiliis did likewise at the other end.

McCrotie again had to come to Berwick’s rescue with two quick-fire saves from McAllister, whilst Willis shot wide and Kieran Stewart had an effort saved by home keeper Fleming.

But the breakthrough came in the 33rd minute when Aidan McIlduff fouled See in the box and Berwick were awarded a penalty.

Willis’s spot kick was saved by Fleming, but Thomson was on hand to net from the rebound.

Within two minutes Thomson had two further chances, a close range effort which he pulled wide and a long range free kick, which was also wide.

As Peterhead tried to get back into the game before half time, Johnston had another shot saved by McCrorie, whilst both sides also had efforts blocked in the lead up to the interval.

The second half also got off to a slow start with little by way of goalmouth action and in an attempt to make things happen, Peterhead made a double substitution with just over 20 minutes remaining.

The equaliser also came via the penalty spot, when, in the 76th minute, Robert Wilson fouled Peterhead substitute Russell McLean and the league’s leading goalscorer, McAllister netted from the spot.

Two minutes later McLean went close himself to putting his side in front, but again, McCrorie was equal to the effort.

McAllister then fired wide from a tight angle, but in the end both sides had to settle for a point.
