Step up and support shops
I so agree with Anne Faragher about Berwick's pathetic Christmas tree.
The Rotary tree at Golden Square looks wonderful; the tree on the Guildhall steps practically invisible.
Not so many years ago, the top windows of the Guildhall were illuminated at Christmas and gave the area a real “Victorian Christmas” feel, which chimed well with the surrounding old buildings.
What has happened to the overhead curtain lights which so improved West Street?
I realise times are hard for traders, so Berwick council please step up to the plate and give these shops, which put up lights, a small reduction in council tax, or a small sum towards electricity costs.
By the way, LED lights are cheap to run.
I am sure the council will have a reserve and for my money it should be spent to improve the town centre, to entice shoppers in.
So back to the scruffy tree on the Guildhall steps – if the council can’t improve on it they’d be better removing it.
