St Mary's pupils helpat care home
As part of a community learning initiative, Year 1 pupils at St Mary's First School are visiting Berwick Care Home fortnightly to work alongside the residents to develop cross-generational links.
The children do a range of activities from reading to crafts, and singing to story-telling, with the aim to foster a sense of community responsibility and pride, while having fun and making new friends at the same time.
The initiative is led by Miss Pearson, the Newfields-based school’s Year 1 teacher, who, with the staff at the care home, are already witnessing the benefits for both residents and pupils, as it provides a different stimulus for learning and enjoyment.
With characters in both groups the stories and tales that are emerging are fantastic, with the children developing a real sense of what it means to be part of the Berwick community.
