Sports complex proposal leads to confusion
The chairman of Berwick Stadium Trust has been left bewildered by the announcement of plans for a new leisure centre in the town.
John Bell was speaking as the trust unveiled its own plan to build first class football and athletics facilities at East Ord.
He revealed: “I had a very positive discussion with Active Northumberland and the county council in September, and thought there was potential for a collaborative approach to providing some great facilities. Since then, there’s been no communication at all, so I can only assume they’re planning a different course of action.
“We can’t just assume everyone will want to get on board with this, it’s up to us to provide people with accurate information and a properly thought-out plan.”

The council plans to leave the Swan Centre and create a modern leisure complex on a different site, with land next to Berwick Rangers’ current stadium seen as one option.
A council spokesman said: “This is an exciting time for Berwick with substantial investment coming to the town and we’re keen to make sure the local community and the council gets value for money and the right facilities. The authority will soon be going out to consult on proposals for the new leisure centre and while we welcome as much feedback as possible we won’t prejudge the consultation.”
