Soldier killed on Otterburn ranges is named

A soldier who died after being shot at the Otterburn military training area during a live firing exercise on Monday night has been named.

He was Conor McPherson, 24, from Paisley, near Glasgow. He was serving with the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances behind the incident but at this stage police believe this was a tragic accident and there are no suspicious circumstances.

A joint investigation is underway between police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) which is being fully supported by the Ministry of Defence and the British Army.

The man received a serious head wound and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
