Whitbread, Premier Inn’s parent company, hopes to open the 60-bedroom hotel in November.

Richard Aldread, head of construction in the UK and Ireland regions for Whitbread, said: “It is an exciting time for the construction of the new Berwick Premier Inn.

“The foundations of the building are complete and Sanderson, our principle contractor, is progressing to build the steel frame of the new hotel building.

“A 40m crane has been installed in the Bridge Street car park to manoeuvre materials on to site and, all being well, the frame of the hotel should be complete in eight weeks’ time.”

He added: “We are extremely grateful for residents’ and traders’ continued patience as we progress with the build.

“Our goal is to open the hotel in November and we do our best to minimise disruption as we work towards the opening date.”

Construction of the £5.5million hotel on Sandgate has been a complicated process. Work was scheduled to begin last July before eventually starting in November.

The hotel will create up to 25 new year-round jobs and support the local economy by attracting more year-round visitors to the town.
