Learmonth won his heat on Saturday, beating Great Britain international James Bowness, which secured his place in probably the highest standard domestic 800m finals for many years.

Athletes in the final included Olympic athletes Elliot Giles and Olympic finalist in London Andrew Osagie, World Championship athlete Kyle Langford and two GB internationals in Jamie Webb and Bowness.

Learmonth ran the race of his life to finish second to Giles to secure an outdoor silver to add to his UK indoors gold. He now has a great chance to qualify for the World Championships in London later in the summer if he can secure the qualifying time of 1.45.9 as the top two are guaranteed a spot in the Great Britain team if they achieve the time.
