And it proved to be a successful day for the competitors as they returned with two medals, one silver and one bronze.

The silver medal winner was Ryan Muir, who finished runner-up in his category in his first-ever open final.

Ryan’s younger brother, Dylan, was also in action, and he fought all the way through to the quarter-finals before being eliminated.

Jessica Foggon competed for the first time in a mixed category narrowly missing out on a semi-final place after being pipped right at the bell in her quarter-final.

The club’s other medal winner was ladies’ veteran Alison Easton, who took bronze as part of her future second dan preparation.

The event attracted about 700 competitors vying for national and open titles.

Coach Michael Exley said: “It was a very good day for the Bu Bujin fighters, and with the sport set to be included in the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan, the club’s young stars have ambitions of a place in future Olympics.”

The Bu Bujin club run classes at Berwick, Eyemouth and Duns. Members train for sporting competition and also learn traditional styles, as well as self-defence karate.
