The event was held in Las Vegas, and Ferreira had travelled out to the USA around 10 days before the competition to finalise his training at the headquarters of the Checkmat team that he represents.

This was the final part of his preparation, having spent several days training with his coach Marco Canha, and some high level black belt competitors at the London Checkmat gym, as well as spending time at the Kilmarnock gym of one of Scotland’s top black belt competitors, Marcos Nardini.

Thiago entered the Master 2, Purple Belt, Middleweight category, and it seemed that this section was quite popular, as he was one of 37 competitors in it, meaning he would have to win five fights to take the title, which is recognised by the IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation) as the World Championship.

Ferreira was due on the mats at 11:30am Las Vegas time, and as they are 8 hours behind it was around 7.30pm UK time, a large crowd turned up at the TF Fitness Centre to watch him, as the event was being streamed live over the internet.
