Scremerston First School praised by Ofsted inspectors

Ofsted inspectors have praised Scremerston First School for the warm and caring environment in which pupils are taught.

This was a short inspection, under the new inspection framework introduced in September 2015, which checks that schools previously judged as good continue to provide a good quality of education.

Head teacher Helen Harrison said: “We are delighted with the inspection letter, which is now published on the Ofsted website.

“It highlights the impact of the close and supportive relationships between staff, governors, pupils, parents and the local community which ensure that, not only do pupils make good academic progress, but also that the school is a warm, caring and welcoming community.”

Inspectors said the school, previously judged good in 2011, continues to be so.

Fiona Manuel, Government inspector, said the leadership team had maintained the good quality of education in the school since the last inspection. They had ‘successfully preserved the warm, caring ethos of a school at the heart of its community’.

She reported that parents are overwhelmingly positive about the steady communication between home and school, and are particularly appreciative of how insightfully each child is known as an individual. Several parents would recommend the school to others ‘unreservedly’ and pupils are united in their opinion that their school is a safe and happy place. Behaviour is good throughout the school.

“Strong, positive links with parents and the on-site pre-school, results in smooth transitions, confident, settled children and a shared understanding of the needs of children and families,” she adds.

She reports that leaders and governors have tackled the areas identified for improvement at the previous inspection effectively. Pupils’ books demonstrate heightened expectations of the quality of pupils’ writing across the curriculum. Improved consistency of teachers’ marking and feedback to pupils is also evident, particularly within English and mathematics. The school is already making amendments to ensure that the gaps in attainment between some boys and girls in English are tackled.
