Saving NHS thousands
I write to say thank you to Berwick Cancer Cars for providing at least 2,600 miles of transport for myself and many others who may have a cancer diagnosis.
Mostly, we have to travel to the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle. Each day, a friendly driver would collect me from my house and take me there.
All the money for these cancer cars has been raised by local people, never knowing if they would one day have a cancer diagnosis necessitating daily journeys to Newcastle for treatment.
Thank you to all the volunteer drivers who gave up their time to transport me.
There are four cars on the road on weekdays, and sometime at weekends, to suit everyone’s needs.
I am aware that the NHS makes no contribution to this service, which if I used patient transport would cost 45 pence a mile, so it has been saved £1,170, and not a penny contribution to Cancer Cars.
Sorry to be living in such a backwater. Sorry I have cancer. Sorry my travel is so expensive.
I am sure when all these accolades of excellence were handed out it certainly did not take into account distances to access treatment or how we would travel.
Thank you Cancer Cars.
