Riverside footbridge closed
A footbridge on a riverside path has been closed for safety reasons.
Northumberland County Council’s Countryside & Green Spaces team have placed a Temporary Closure Order on the footbridge over the Common Burn at New Water Haugh, upstream of Berwick near Chateau Pedro.
The bridge connects the New Road footpath with a wooded area known as The Plantation.
The footbridge has been deteriorating for some time and due to the nature of the stream banks and unstable approaches, the footbridge will not be replaced, but a diversion of the footpath will be sought. In the short-term, unfortunately this means there is no bridging point to link each end of the footpath.
Area countryside officer Philip Bradley said the council is currently negotiating a temporary alternative route with, hopefully, a permanent diversion of the public footpath, in due course.
