Berwick Town Council has bought a vacant retail unit at the entrance to Castlegate car park.

The unit was purchased by Berwick Town Council earlier this year with a view to providing visitor information services but has remained empty since then.

“The problem is the roof,” town clerk Gareth Davies told councillors. “We have contacted in the region of 20 roofing contractors. We have had one who provided a quote but was too busy to do the work. We reached out to new contractors further afield last week. I am personally frustrated.”

“We still have our ambitions for it but if we did not choose to use it as a tourism hub I am confident that once it’s watertight, it could be let within a matter of weeks. I have a fresh inquiry every two weeks.”

He added: “That tells me there is probably a shortage of small, affordable units in the town centre.”
