Berwick Town Council has bought a vacant retail unit at the entrance to Castlegate car park.

Contractors have begun work on fixing the leaking roof at the vacant unit near the entrance to the Castlegate car park.

Berwick Town Council bought the unit last March with a view to potentially providing a tourism offer.

It was vacated by Deyn’s Deli in autumn 2017 but has been a tourist information centre in the past.

Work has been delayed because of the council’s difficulty in finding a contractor.

In November, town clerk Gareth Davies said: “We still have our ambitions for it but if we did not choose to use it as a tourism hub I am confident that once it’s watertight, it could be let within a matter of weeks. I have a fresh inquiry every two weeks.

“That tells me there is probably a shortage of small, affordable units in the town centre.”
