Red letter day for Holy Island

Holy Island was chosen as the setting to celebrate the first day of issue of the Royal Mail's 1991 Christmas stamps.

The theme was the First Christmas and the stamps depicted scenes from the nativity reproduced from a 14th century illuminated manuscript Acts of Mary and Jesus.

And postemen from Berwick took the stamps to children at Holy Island School, arriving in time for a presentation ceremony by Jeremy Scotts, Newcastle District’s then head postmaster.
