Prices for GP referral scheme lowered
Active Northumberland is reducing the price of the Northumberland Exercise on Referral Scheme which works in partnership with local GP surgeries to encourage residents with specific health conditions to become more active.
The cost of each referral session has been reduced from £5.60 to £4 (£3.50 concessions), or referrals can take advantage of a reduced price centre membership of £26 per month.
The discounted pricing structure will come into effect from April 1, helping to make the scheme accessible to more people and assist in improving health and wellbeing.
Through the initiative, GPs and other health professionals can refer individuals, who they feel would benefit from physical activity to help them improve their medical conditions, to their local leisure centre.
Once a person is referred to their local Active Northumberland leisure centre they will have an initial appointment with a fully qualified member of the fitness team to assess their needs and abilities.
They then attend two supervised activity sessions a week, over a six month period which could include fitness classes, swimming, gym or other activity sessions.
The scheme has both mental and physical benefits.
As well as improving cardiovascular and muscular strength, weight loss and lowering blood pressure, physical activity can also help promote confidence and well being.
Coun Cath Homer, cabinet member with responsibility for leisure said: “Most people are aware that being active is good for your health, but knowing what activities are suitable can be very daunting if you have a medical condition such as high blood pressure or heart disease.
“The Northumberland Exercise On Referral Scheme is there for people identified by their GP who may benefit from increasing their physical activity levels as part of a structured exercise programme. This is delivered in a safe, social environment by an experienced team of instructors.”
Liz Morgan, director of Public Health at Northumberland County Council said: “This is a service used by GPs as part of their management of people with chronic illnesses such as cardiac, lung and respiratory diseases. Making exercise a key part of your routine can really benefit your overall health.”
The cost of each referral session has been reduced from £5.60 to £4.00 ( £3.50 concessions), or referrals can take advantage of a reduced price centre membership of £26 per month.
