Pop-up dinner showcasing the best of local produce
There is another opportunity to taste some of the best locally-sourced produce at a pop-up dinner being hosted at Upper West Street restaurant in Berwick tomorrow evening.
The specially-created Northumberland and Borders, three-course tapas-style menu features ingredients from a range of producers located within a 16-mile radius of Berwick.
The dishes include tortillas made with Carroll’s Heritage Potatoes from Duddo, smoked Eyemouth haddock croquettes and a selection of cured, smoked and cooked meats from Hammond Charcuterie, an artisan business based in Spittal and owned by Rachel Hammond, who uses traditional methods and the highest-welfare locally-sourced rare-breed pork, mutton and wild game sourced from north Northumberland and the eastern Scottish Borders.
The desserts are a choice of either West Street Mess, made with Oxford Farm meringues and raspberry coulis, or Chainbridge Honey and ginger cheesecake.
The Upper West Street event is one of the series of pop-up dinners being promoted this spring by the Mouth of the Tweed local food heritage initiative, supported by the Berwick Slow Food Group.
The first two themed dinners were hosted by Gasparro’s Restaurant in Bridge Street at the end of February.
Owner Charlie Head was delighted with the response. “The event was a great success. It was fully booked on both nights and this shows the demand for local food.
“Hopefully these pop up Mouth of the Tweed events will continue to be a success and a regular occurrence. Since this event we have tried even harder to use more local food and drink on the menu.
“Diners were surprised at the sheer variety of different produce available from our immediate locality, even in the depths of winter.”
Ruth McNeely, of Slow Food Berwick, said: “Fourteen members of the Berwick Slow Food group were among the diners who thoroughly enjoyed a great evening at Gasparro’s, celebrating yummy local food served in a lovely setting. The menu created by Charlie showcased how lucky we are to have such a wonderful range of local food on our doorstep. The pork loin slow cooked in milk was particularly good.
“We look forward to the next meal at Upper West Street when once again the creativity of our local food produce will be evident with a menu featuring a range of tasty tapas.”
