Plan for 4G improvements
Plans have been lodged for new telecommunications apparatus in Berwick town hall to provide improved 4G coverage for Vodafone and Telefonica in the town centre.
It is proposed to remove and replace four antennas and four windows of the Grade I listed building.
A report with the application states: ‘The removal and replacement of the window and their frames is required specifically to allow an effective transmission to be achieved. Without this, the transmission would be impeded by the glass and associated timber framing, rending the upgrade unviable. By having four antennas, one in each elevation), the operators can achieve 360 degree coverage in the town centre.’

The antennas would be located internally within the existing clock tower at a height of 27.5m above ground level. They would be slightly larger than those they replace but this would not be noticeable from public viewpoints.
