The competition was fierce, with 8,000 images entered from 60 countries and organisers said the standard was exceptional.

Judges said Derek’s shot stood out from the rest in its category, however, for the way in which he made the subject matter so atmospheric and distinctive.

It was the second time Derek has had success in the competition, having been a finalist in 2016.

Earlier this year he was shortlisted for Black & White Photographer of the Year 2018 for a shot called Stargazer which he took in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés area of Paris.

He has also been a finalist in several major international competitions, including Art of Building Photographer of the Year 2015 and 2016.
