Station team pay their respects to Spider

Berwick-upon-Tweed Lifeboat Station has had its flag at half mast for former crewman Douglas Blackhall, known to many in the town as Spider, who died on June 2.

He stepped down from his duties in November 2019, due to health problems, following 15 years of valuable service.

Taking social distancing into account, on Monday all members were two metres apart in front of the station to pay their respects as the hearse passed by to take him to his final resting place.

Lead Coxswain Ali Laing said: “Spider will be missed by us all. He was a fantastic crew member.

“He will be remembered for his dedication to the station, but mostly for his quick wit, sense of humour and his stories for every occasion.”
