At its recent AGM held virtually, Oliul Khan was elected as vice chairman. He runs the Magna Tandoori restaurant in Bridge Street.

Stephen Scott, a partner at The Walls B&B, was re-elected as chairman and John Gardiner was re-elected as treasurer.

Gayle Skelly stepped down from the role of secretary following the closure of her business.

The chairman’s report to the AGM reflected on the past 12 months, which was dominated by the pandemic and lockdowns that had a major impact on all business types.

The Chamber performed a role to communicate details of the various business support packages to its members and helped where required when problems occurred with grant applications.

There were some positives, including the Christmas Loyalty Scheme. It was run for the second year and was very successful, despite the lockdown in November.

More businesses participated in the scheme and the prize fund was increased to £650 thanks to support from Greaves West & Ayre.

A late-night shopping event was organised in the run-up to the festive period and the Chamber helped to record a Christmas song which promoted local businesses.

Mr Scott stated that looking ahead at the next 12 months, the group’s focus would be solely on assisting local businesses and Berwick to recover economically.

He said: “Now that construction of the new retail park, which the Chamber objected to at the planning stage, has started, we need to develop an approach to mitigate the impact of it on the town centre and to identify ways to turn this challenge into an opportunity rather than a threat.

“On behalf of our members, I would like to pass on my thanks to the outgoing secretary for her help and support over the past year. As for our new vice chairman, I know that Oliul’s youth, experience and enthusiasm will be of huge benefit.”
