The team at The Mule on Rouge launched a GoFundMe campaign last week for the man who was the proprietor of fellow Bridge Street business Slightly Foxed, a book shop. He died in February.

They had already commissioned reputed Northumberland wood carver Bill Pierce with a view to having a carving situated in the planter at the entrance of Bridge Street car park, overseeing Simon’s legacy.

They have the blessing of Simon’s wife, Jenny, and his daughters Alice and Ava will have the final say over the design. The target amount of £1,500 was raised in less than 36 hours and the page was stopped at £1,850, with the additional funds going to the family.

Sion Gates of The Mule on Rouge said: “Simon was a good friend and professionally, he was integral to the dynamic of Bridge Street, so it felt right to try and raise the required funds for a permanent memorial.

"The amazing response to the GoFundMe page was testament to how well he was thought of in Berwick and it appears that many others who knew him from outside the town also donated.

"Discussions are now taking place with Bill about the design and we are aiming to have the memorial in place before Christmas.”
