Berwick’s Open Gardens has become a firm fixture in the town’s events calendar.

And although you will not be able to visit the private green spaces this year, the Friends of Berwick Castle Parks are running a virtual event that will go live on Monday.

Instead of physically opening their gardens, friends and supporters of the Friends are submitting photos of their gardens and plants for display on the group’s website – www.friendsofcastleparks.org

This will enable people to ‘visit’ around 20 private gardens in Berwick.

Friends’ member Peter Bistram said: “This year will be different, of course, but we’re delighted to be able to create a garden trail around the town that will enable residents and virtual visitors from all over the world to have a look at the wonderful gardens that are hidden behind walls and tucked down the alleyways of our historic town.

“It may even allow people with limited mobility and those in care homes to enjoy our event in a way they’ve not been able to in previous years.”

The aim of the event is to present a colourful and compelling tour of some of the town’s most eclectic and beautiful private spaces that are not usually open to the public.

Parks development officer Kate Dixon said: “Our friends and supporters work hard all year round to support the upkeep of the parks and to maintain their own lovely gardens.

“We’re delighted that we can still present this key event in an online version.

“Please do visit the website and share the event as widely as possible, as this may well encourage more visitors next year when we hope to return to our usual format.

“We also look forward to being able to run all our usual family-friendly events in 2021 – from meadow raking to the ever-popular Big Beastie Hunt.”

Open Gardens Online is a free tour and people are free to visit as many times as they wish from Monday.

There will be an opportunity to donate online during your visit to support the work of the Friends of Berwick Castle Parks in enhancing the local parks and organising a range of accessible outdoor events.
