Berwick Thought for the Week: Star Wars … and then some

Some people prefer Star Trek. Personally, I prefer Star Wars – I can still remember seeing it at the cinema and being totally blown away by the story, and particularly the special effects.

Which reminds me of another story. In this epic, a Supreme Being creates a complete universe including a beautiful planet and all the creatures on it.

In time, the Being creates two humans on that planet unlike any others before. It then charts their and their descendants’ story over time.

It involves cataclysmic events worthy of any Hollywood blockbuster – huge floods, seas being parted on command, families divided by murder, hate and envy, characters with the ability to foretell the future, raging battles, giants and immortals who exist without beginning or end.

The central figure has all the characteristics you would expect of a hero, and more. He is loving, loyal and fights against corruption, the abuse of power and the oppression of the poor and helpless.

The climax of the story, where He is killed in the most gruesome fashion possible but then brought back to life so that He can join His Father, the Supreme Being, is both upsetting and uplifting in equal measure.

The amazing thing about this story is that it is true. Many of the events have been proven by archaeologists and historians to have occurred and the existence of many of the key characters has been recorded in a number of accurate historical documents.

The central event where the hero, Jesus, is killed at the hands of an oppressive empire was recorded by a number of individuals and their accounts clearly corroborate each other. How amazing is that …. oh, and the other amazing thing is that there is to be a sequel which could be released at any time.
