PARK: Give project more thought
When I read an article that Northumberland County Councillor Georgina Hill wants to revamp the Highcliffe play area (Berwick Advertiser, June 21), it was unbelievable reading.
When this play area was first set up there was equipment there for older children.
However, this caused a great deal of problems for the residents in close proximity to the play area.
Older children from other areas were meeting there and some damage was being caused.
There was also a problem with people sleeping in the vicinity of the play area at night.
These problems have been resolved over the latter years and it is more peaceful now as the young ones play together.
The last thing that is needed in the play area is noise and disturbance in the late evenings for the residents, especially the older residents.
Yes, upgrade Highcliffe play area, it does need some more equipment, but Coun Hill seems to be more concerned about the older children.
That is fair enough. If she would like a multi-purpose games area, install the equipment beside the skate park play area where it is not in such close proximity to residents.
It is a win-win situation – younger children will have some new equipment and older youths will have more equipment suitable for their use.
As a resident of Highcliffe, I feel that I would not be able to support the mix of toddlers and youths in a multi-use games area in the Highcliffe play area.
I think that Coun Hill needs to look into this project in more depth.
